How to wear Harem Pants

  

The looser the better and the more pleats the trendier. Harem pants are the big fashion trend for this spring/summer. They were a big hit in the eighties when MC Hammer wore them and have returned to the fashion world this year in even more extreme versions.

They’re ultra-tight at the bottom and super-loose at the crotch. And since pleats are already in fashion this summer extra pleats make the harem pants look very 2010.

If you wanna try this trend in a safe way, you can start of with a pair of harem pants in black or beige (MaxMara, Badgley Mischka, Moschino). Yet, if you wanna proof you’ve got style you really should wear one of those multi-colored, printed ones we saw at Etro, Givenchy, Kenzo and Karl Noten.

Whatever you wear on top, you should tuck it in your pants. And if you’re wearing a high-waisted version of the harem pants a waist-belt is a great finishing detail.

Together with the jumpsuit, a pair of harem pants are true musthaves this summer. And the great thing about it: they are oh-so comfortable.

Tips:

DO: Select the right fabric
Some fabrics will drape more elegantly than others; light drapey fabrics are the most flattering, e.g. silk or cotton jersey.

DO: Know how low you can go
Make sure the drop crotch folds are elegant and sit well, rather than in a sloppy manner. Harem pants that sag in the centre half way down your legs don’t flatter most people. Instead, choose a leaner style, especially if you are under 5' 3". A capri-length variation can be very flattering, as a certain portion of your leg is exposed, lengthening the look.

DO: Keep It Proportional

Harem pants obviously draw the eyes to the lower body, and with harem pants this is a good thing, however proud you are to have your lower half on display. The beauty of harem pants is in the way they tend to drape over the hips and thighs while hugging close to the knees and shins. With a regular pair of jeans or pants, this idea would simply look like you are wearing baggy pants, but harem pants are deliberate in their wide look, lending accentuation to one's natural curves or a subtle camouflage if need be.

So with this in mind, always be sure to keep things in proportion whenever possible. The idea of proportionality as it applies here is that the pants themselves no matter how they are cut are going to be on the baggy, wide side of the equation. When you are wearing something loose fitting on one half of your body, the general idea is to wear something a little more form fitting on the other half. This is to avoid looking as if you are simply wearing clothing that is much larger than the size that actually fits you. For instance, if have an ample chest, avoid shoulder pads or clothes that add bulk to your upper body and instead wear a fitted blazer or form fitting blouse to maintain the natural flow of your body.

DO: Get the Cut that Fits

Every body type is different, and not all fabrics are appropriate for every situation. When looking at harem pants for the first time, your initial reaction might be to think that they only look right on the runway models or others with a thin frame. You would definitely be incorrect in this assumption. In order to wear harem pants in a way that looks good for your particular body type, pick pants that are cut to go with what looks best on you. Additionally, be sure the fabric is appropriate for the situation.

For instance for an evening out, select a more elegant fabric such as silk or another more delicate fabric. These types of fabrics allow for a cut that will drape more gracefully than cotton for instance, which is a good material for when you're out on everyday activities. Not every body shape is suitable for the more distinct low crotch that is heavily accentuated on some styles of harem pants. A good idea is to stick with harem pants that sit well across the hips and the crotch area folds nicely rather than hangs like a bag between the legs. You might also want to think about going with a high waist, which will narrow your waist and add to the billowy effect.

DO: Accessorize Wisely

If you're going with big, billowy harem pants or even the slimmer knee-length type, a big floppy bag is best to round out the look. This is assuming you are going with a top that hugs your figure. If you are going loose on top, it's best to stick with an elegant clutch so that all the bagginess doesn't get you mistaken as an actual bag-lady.

As far as necks and wrists, remember that harem pants are meant to be sensuous and fluid, so choose earrings, necklaces and bracelets that follow this theme. Big chunky necklaces or chandelier earrings draw attention away from the lower body and will offset the proportions set by sticking to a body hugging top or blouse. Go with long, narrow earrings and bracelets and necklaces composed of thin, long pieces.

DO: Keep it simple 
Follow an ethnic trend, chunky pieces, but not too many at once (usually just one or two at a time). Keep tops, cardigans and jackets, such as tailored jackets or a fitted boyfriend blazer, simple, as the pants are already the feature; alternatively skip the jewellery and wear a more costume-like top as the accent.

DO: Tuck it in
To balance out the bagginess at the waist and the fullness at the legs, harem & peg pants are best worn with a fitted top, like a tank top, casual silk T-shirt (or brightly coloured tee) or fitted feminine blouse. 

DO: Lighten up
If you feel the style is too masculine, go for soft pastels and blush tones, which are more feminine and will provide a much softer look.

DO: Jump it!

If you have trouble finding a look that works for you, then try one a slouchy harem-style jumpsuits instead. 

DO: Belt it up.

It's a minimal addition that doesn't distract from the interesting part of the outfit - the silhouette. To add some glamour to this classic tailoring, add a wide statement belt, or even an obi-inspired corset (click!). 

DO: Modify the runway look.
Subtlety, femininity, sequins, leather - infuse them into this look, while keeping the shape simple and chic.

DO: Distract

You can draw the eye upward to the top half of your body with interesting detailing, graphic prints, vibrant colour, or a bold accessory. 

DON'T: Be afraid to mix trends
You may wear it with a tuxedo jacket, or with a striped top for a French/Nautical 'take' on Harem pants.

DO: Pair it with high heels
This will give you the added height needed and it also balances out your figure; gladiator sandals or strappy stilettos, the higher the better. You can even add boots but, not tall boots that will not give the proper effect. Flat shoes look elegant, but will deaden the harem pants look unless you are very slim/tall.
DO: Indulge in the comfort of harem pants.

Once you find the right ones, you'll want to wear them all the time! They are oh-so chic and comfy.

Quanto mais solto melhor e mais pregas tiver mais in estará. As calças harém são a grande tendência da moda para esta Primavera/Verão. Elas foram um grande sucesso na década de oitenta, quando o MC Hammer  as usava e voltaram ao mundo da moda este ano, em versões ainda mais extremas.
Eles surgem ultra-apertadas na parte inferior e super-soltas na virilha. E como as pregas já estão na moda neste verão, pregas extra farão com que as calças harém fiquem com um ar muito 2010.
Se quiser experimentar esta tendência de forma segura, você pode começar com um par de calças harém em preto, branco, cinzento, castanho ou bege (MaxMara, Badgley Mischka, Moschino). No entanto, se você quiser por à prova que tem estilo e que realmente deveria usar um desses  modelitos multi-coloridas, vejo acima os exemplos da Etro, Givenchy, Kenzo e Karl Noten. Tudo o que use como parte de cima deve enfiar por dentro das calças. E se estiver usando uma versão de cintura alta das calças harém coloque um cinto, pois dá um acabamento final assombroso. Juntamente com o macacão, um par de calças harém são verdadeiros must-haves neste verão. E depois, são bem confortáveis.


Dicas:
 
DO: Selecione o tecido certo  
Alguns tecidos vão cair de uma forma mais elegante do que os outros; tecidos drapeados e leves favorecem mais, por exemplo, jersey de seda ou algodão.
DO: Sinta-se bem
 Certifique-se de que as pregas soltas na virilha são elegantes e que se sente bem, em vez de uma forma descuidada. As calças harém que ficam com tecido a abanar no meio das pernas não ajudam a maioria das pessoas. Em vez disso, escolha um estilo menos baggy nesse sítio, especialmente se você tem menos de 160 cm. Uma variação de comprimento capri pode ser muito lisonjeira, como uma determinada parte da sua perna está exposta, alongando as pernas.
DO: Mantenha tudo proporcional  
As calças harém, obviamente, fazem-nos lançar os olhos para a parte inferior do corpo, e com elas isso é um ponto a favor, caso esteja orgulhosa da parte referida que salta mais à vista. Então, com isso em mente, certifique-se sempre em manter as coisas em proporção, sempre que possível. A ideia da proporcionalidade que se aplica aqui é que quanto às calças não importa o corte delas, pois vão estar sempre ter um aspecto um solto. Quando estiver vestindo algo mais solto na parte de baixo, use peças mais justas na outra metade do seu corpo. A ideia geral é usar algo que crie um pouco mais de forma sobre a outra metade. Isto para evitar que pareça que está simplesmente usando a roupa que é muito maior do que o tamanho que corresponde ao seu corpo. Por exemplo, se tem um peito grande, evite ombreiras e roupas que acrescentam volume à parte superior do corpo e, em vez disso, opte por usar um blazer ou  uma blusa que se ajuste ao seu corpo para manter o fluxo natural do seu corpo.
DO: Consiga o corte que a favorece 
 Cada tipo de corpo é diferente e nem todos os tecidos são adequados para cada situação. Ao olhar para as calças harém, pela primeira vez, a sua primeira reação poderia ser a de pensar que só ficariam bem nos modelos que pisam os desfiles ou outras pessoas com uma moldura fina. Com certeza gostaria de estar incorrecto nesse pressuposto, a fim de usar calças harém de uma forma que pareça favorecer o seu tipo de corpo em  particular. Para isso, terá que escolher as calças que tenham um corte que se ajuste às suas necessidades. Além disso, verifique se o tecido é adequado para a situação. Por exemplo, para sair à noite, escolha tecidos mais elegantes como, a seda ou outro tecido mais delicado. Estes tipos de tecidos vão permitir um corte que vai armar mais graciosamente do que o algodão, por exemplo, que é um material bom para quando você estiver fora em atividades menos formais. Nem todos os corpos são adequados para a virilha mais baixa que é muito acentuada em alguns estilos de calças harém. Uma boa ideia é ficar com as calças harém que ficam bem em todo o quadril e a região da virilha menos descida para que não se pareça com uma bolsa entre as pernas. Por outro lado, também pode optar por usar umas com uma cintura alta, que vai reduzir a sua cintura e conferir um efeito adelgaçante.
DO: "Accessorizar" sabiamente 
 Se quiser usar um estilo mais baggy ou mesmo o tipo mais fino pela altura do joelho, uma mala grande é o melhor para completar o look. Isto supondo que usa com um top que adelgaça a sua figura. Se usar uma parte de cima mais solta, é melhor optar por uma clutch elegante para que tantas peças baggy não a confundam com um verdadeiro saco de batatas.
Quanto ao pescoço e pulsos, lembre-se que as calças harem são destinadas a serem sensuais e fluídas. Assim, escolha brincos, colares e pulseiras que sigam o tema. colares ou brincos chandelier desviam a atenção da parte inferior do corpo e compensam as proporções do conjunto, dirigindo o olhar para a parte superior do corpo. Escolha brincos longos e pulseiras estreitas e colares composto de finos, longos trechos.
DO: Mantenha o look simples 
 Adira a uma tendência étnica, peças robustas, mas não muitas de uma só vez (geralmente apenas um ou duas). Adira nos tops, casacos e blazers, como blazers detalhados ou um blazer boyfriend. É simples, como as calças já são o recurso, alternativamente ignore as jóias e dê mais importância ao top.
DO: Coloque a parte de cima por dentro das calças 
Para equilibrar o estilo solto na cintura e nas pernas, as calças harém são mais usadas com um top justo, como um tank top, t-shirt em seda (ou uma t-shirt colorida) ou uma blusa feminina justa.
DO: Ilumine o look
 Se sentir que o estilo é muito masculino, vá para  tons pastéis e blush, que são mais femininos e vão dar um aspecto mais suave
DO: Esqueça as calças harém!
 Se tem dificuldade em encontrar um look que funciona consigo, então tente um macacão em estilo harém em vez das ditas calças harém.
DO: Adorne com cintos 
 É um adorno mínimo que não distrai da parte interessante do look - a silhueta. Para adicionar algum encanto acrescente um statement belt, ou um cinto estilo corpete (clique!)
DO: Modificar o que vê nos desfiles  
Subtileza, feminilidade, lantejoulas, couro - adicione-os ao seu look, mantendo de uma forma simples e chique.
DO: Distrair
Você pode distrair as atenções para a metade superior de seu corpo com detalhes interessantes, estampas gráficas, cores vibrantes, ou um acessório ousado.
DON'T: tenha medo de misturar tendências 
 Você pode usar um blazer, ou com um top listrado muito French/Naútico juntamente com as calças harém.
DO: Combine com saltos altos
Isto dar-lhe-à a altura necessária e também equilibrará a sua figura; sandálias gladiador ou sandálias de salto alto, quanto maiores, melhor. Pode até adicionar botas, mas não botas de cano alto que não dará o efeito adequado. Bailarinas ou sabrinas dão uma aparência elegante, mas vai esmorecer as calças harém. Use apenas bailarinas ou sabrinas se for alta/magra.
DO: Sinta-se bem no conforto das calças harém  
Depois de encontrar as calças certas para si, vai querer usá-las o tempo todo! Elas são tão chiques e confortáveis.

Q: "I love the heavy horn-rimmed geek-chic glasses that everyone's wearing now. But how can I pull them off without looking super-nerdy?"

A: Easy: Make certain that nothing else about your look is nerdy. I love these glasses on women. When everything else about your look is polished and sophisticated, the horn-rims add a touch of counterpoint and intellectuality. Black and brown are the classic colors for these frames, but tortoiseshell and even clear are other style options. Consider your coloring when choosing a pair and think about the great company you'll be in: Grace Kelly used to rock this look, and Cate Blanchett does so today!

Q: "How short can a skirt be and still qualify as work-appropriate? Do opaque tights make a difference?"

A: My inclination is to ask, "Well, what sort of work is it that you do?" But I'm being facetious. If you're under 35 and have great legs, you can venture up to 2 inches above the top of your kneecap. If you're more mature, regardless of your great legs, then the hem can range anywhere from the top to the bottom of your kneecap. Under no circumstances should your skirt be higher than that...unless you're in an occupational costume. And under no circumstances should a skirt be longer than that, unless you're going for the matronly look. As for opaque tights, I love them, but they do not excuse a too-short skirt.

Q: "I'm broad-shouldered and have a small chest. I love the menswear-for-women trend (blazers, button-downs, oxfords), but I feel too manly when I wear it. Any advice?"

A: First of all, be grateful that you have a small chest. Many women with big breasts who sport this look feel like a house! But admittedly, this style is manly. Some women are comfortable with this aspect, but for those who prefer to feminize it, my principles of silhouette, proportion, and fit have never been truer. Apparel should follow your natural shape: eschew anything baggy or oversize. Avoid any exaggeration in the construction of blazers, especially bulky shoulder pads and overly wide lapels. Button-down shirts can be worn with the tail tucked in or pulled out — if it's the latter, then wear a belt over it to break up the volume. As for the lace-up oxford look, I'd chuck it...unless you're going full-throttle masculine or it's Halloween.

R: Fácil: Certifique-se de que nada mais no seu look é nerd. Eu amo esses óculos nas mulheres. Quando tudo o mais no seu look é fino e sofisticado, e esses óculos adicionam um toque de contraponto e intelectualidade. Preto e marrom são as cores clássicas para esses óculos mas, a cor tartaruga e ainda transparente são outras opções de estilo. Considere a sua coloração quando escolher um par e pensar sobre a grande empresa você estará em: Grace Kelly costuma usar esse look, e Cate Blanchett faz o mesmo hoje!

Q: "Quão curta pode uma saia ser e como pode ser apropriada para o trabalho? Os collants opacos fazem a diferença?"

R: A minha inclinação é perguntar: "Bem, que tipo de trabalho é o seu?" Mas eu estou sendo jocoso. Se estiver nos seus 35 e tiver boas pernas, pode aventurar-se a 2 polegadas acima do topo da sua rótula. Caso seja mais madura, independentemente das suas boas pernas, então a barra pode variar em qualquer lugar do topo para a base de sua rótula. Sob nenhuma circunstância a sua saia deve mais subida do que isso... a menos que você está usando um traje especial de trabalho. Nem deve ser uma saia ser mais comprida do que isso, a menos que esteja inclinada para um look de matrona. Quanto a collants opacos, eu amo-os mas, não desculpa uma saia muito curta.

Q: "Eu tenho ombros largos e pouco peito. Eu amo as tendências masculinas para as mulheres (blazers, camisas, sapatos estilo oxford) mas, sinto-me muito masculinizada quando eu visto este género de roupa. Algum conselho?"

R: Primeiro de tudo, dê graças pelo que tem. Muitas mulheres com seios grandes que adoptam este look sentem-se monstruosamente volumosas dado o volume do seu peito! Mas é certo, esse estilo é viril. Algumas mulheres estão confortáveis com este aspecto, mas para aquelas que preferem ser femininas, os meus princípios da silhueta, proporção, e forma física nunca foram mais verdadeiros. O Vestuário deve seguir a sua forma natural: evite tudo o que seja folgado ou muito grandes. Evite qualquer exagero na construção de blazers, especialmente ombros volumosas e lapelas excessivamente amplas. Camisas podem ser usadas por dentro ou puxadas para fora - se for o caso, em seguida, use um cinto por cima para quebrar o volume. Quanto aos sapatos estilo oxford, eu simplesmente poria essa opção de parte... a menos que queira parecer uma "borboleta masculina" ou vá para o Halloween.

True Colors

"Can I wear brown and black together, like a brown skirt with a black top? Are there still rules against that?"

I find that few looks are quite as chic as brown and black together. However, it's very important that it be the correct brown, because not any brown will do. I find that a deep-chocolate brown is the most successful choice to wear with black. This is especially true with accessories: deep-chocolate only! Otherwise your look will become entirely too casual to support the chic. A word to the wise: The only time that I have seen brown footwear work with black was in the case of a knee-high, chocolate suede boot and black tights. Stunning!

Dressing 101


"I'm an MBA student on a tight budget. At my last job, I rotated between three pairs of slacks and button-downs. Now, as a marketing major, I want to show more personality. Any recommendations?"

I believe women in business should dress like women. Show off your curves and celebrate your gender. Keep your slacks, and wear them with printed wrap tops that correspond to your taste. I suggest wrap tops because, like a wrap dress (God bless Diane von Furstenberg!), they let you customize the fit and give you shape. If my words about fit, fit, fit concern you, consider our secretary of state: I have the greatest admiration and respect for her, but she often looks like she's wearing menswear. Why can't more businesswomen and politicos emulate the divine Nancy Pelosi?

Metal Down Now


"I love the stud trend, but I don't think I'm edgy enough for it. Any advice for working it into my wardrobe without looking like I'm trying too hard?"

Since you love the stud trend, embrace it! I respect the fact that you don't want to look like one of London's Pearly Kings or Queens. I was just with a colleague who was wearing a neutral-color top with a stud treatment in the same hue. It wasn't even remotely over the top. But if that's too much for you, then consider studded accessories: handbags, shoes, belts. There are myriad options available, so find one that suits your taste and your lifestyle.

"Posso usar marrom e preto juntos, como uma saia marrom com um top preto? Ainda há regras contra isso?"

Acho que alguns looks são tão chiques com marrom e preto juntos. No entanto, é muito importante que seja o correcto marrom, porque não pode ser qualquer marrom. Acho que um fundo no tom chocolate negro é a escolha mais bem sucedida quando vestir de preto. Isto é especialmente verdade com os acessórios: "deep-chocolate" só! Caso contrário, o seu look se tornará inteiramente demasiado casual e não chique. Uma palavrinha de sábio: A única vez que vi o trabalho do calçado marrom com o preto foi no caso de uma bota de cano alto em camurça no tom "chocolate suede" e meias pretas. Impressionante!

Mantenha as suas calças, e use-as com tops de trespasse estampados que correspondem ao seu gosto. Sugiro tops trespassados porque, tal como, um vestido trespassado (Deus abençoe a Diane von Furstenberg!), permitem que possa personalizar o "caír" e dar-lhe forma. Se minhas palavras sobre a forma lhe causam preocupação, considere a nossa secretária de estado (norte americano): Tenho a maior admiração e respeito por ela, mas muitas vezes parece que ela está vestindo roupa masculina. Por que não podem mais empresárias e mulheres da política imitar a divina Nancy Pelosi?

"Eu amo a tendência stud, mas eu acho que não chego ao extremo de usar. Algum conselho para adaptá-lo ao meu guarda-roupa sem pensarem que eu estou a tentar demasiado?"

Como ama a tendência stud, abrace-a! Eu respeito o facto de que você não se quer parecer como uma das rainhas ou reis do Pearly Londrino. Eu estava há um bocado atrás com uma colega que estava vestindo um top de cor neutra, com studs no mesmo tom. Não era nada do outro mundo. Mas se isso é demais para si, então considere acessórios com studs: bolsas, sapatos, cintos. Existem inúmeras opções disponíveis, assim que tente encontrar um que se adapte ao seu gosto e ao seu estilo de vida.
